Catherine's Annual Yuletide Carol Concert Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a message before the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to budding artists backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
